HISTORY
Our story began with a card game in Austin,Texas in 1892, Charles Feldstein won a piece of land that was located in Marinette, WI. He made the trip on the wagon route many times to Chicago to sell or trade his goods. When Charles finally went to see what he had won, he saw a great opportunity in the booming logging town. Charles opened the original Feldstein’s that was known as “Loan Brokers and Jewelers.” in 1892. The store sold musical instruments, golf clubs, luggage, clocks, and jewelry.
Charles’ son Sam(Picture on the right), who was one of four boys in the family, worked long hours seven days a week to keep the business going. Sam graduated high school at the age of 16 and went on to watch making school. He then returned to run the store.
In the 1940's, one of the sons of Charles, Phillip head to Green Bay to put his store in. It was located on Washington Street downtown by the Bay Theatre, now Meyer Theatre. Charles other son Manny went the other way. Manny went up to Escanaba Michigan to run his store. If you go downtown Escanaba on Ludington Street, there is a still a big sign on one of the buildings painted Feldstein Jewelers. All locations were the same name, Feldstein Jewelers.
During the 1970's Sam had a daughter named Janice who married Rick Francois. Rick decided to get into the family business and was soon running the store. Feldstein’s became a high-end jewelry store. At one time Rick had owned 13 jewelry stores throughout the state of Wisconsin. They were all had different names. Including Bakke's of Green Bay. Rick’s brother, Scott Francois, was managing Feldstein’s after working for Ike Friedman at Borsheims in Omaha, NE in the early 1980's. In 1988, Scott and his wife Julie bought the store from Rick.Over the years, the store location changed several times. It started in the booming downtown Marinette and moved to the Pine Tree Mall.
When Scott took over, he had expanded Feldsteins to 4 locations in the 1990's. Two locations in Marinette, one location in downtown escanba, MI, and one location in the birchwood mall in Kingsford, MI. The current location in Marinettte is in a free-standing store located on the main highway that connects Wisconsin to Michigan on highway 41. Scott has two sons, Mitch and Tommy, who are also in the business.
A second location that is a similar look to the store in marinette is in Green Bay, WI. Located In the Howard/Suamico area where it is a booming community. The 6,000 square foot building is in one of the up-and-coming areas of Green Bay. Feldstein’s is the oldest jeweler in Green Bay. We look forward to being the jeweler that people can trust with their precious jewelry.
